Summer is approaching and you might be planning to build a garden building this year. A garden building can be a great way to improve the aesthetics of your garden, increase storage, or provide an additional income by renting it out as a guest house.
When building a garden building, it is important to consider the planning, designing, and construction that will need to take place. Here at Vale Stables, we provide you with the highest quality building tailored to your individual needs, whether the building is being used to store garden equipment or as a Wendy House.
Here are some of our most frequently asked questions to help you when planning to build a garden building.
How can you get the best out of your garden building? What do you need to be aware of before you begin? We understand you may have a few questions when planning your garden building and hopefully, we can help you by answering them here.
No,you do not need planning permission when planning to build a garden building. Most of our garden buildings are considered a permitted development, so you do not require planning permission. Our garden buildings can be as simple or complex as you need and are hassle-free when it comes to planning permission.
However, we recommend checking your local council’s planning portal to confirm if permitted development rights apply in your specific case. Permitted development rights are subject to national conditions and limitations so it is important to check if you are planning on a particularly large garden building or if the construction might impact habitats within your garden.
A garden building is essentially a timber garden shed that can be used for whatever you want it to be. For example, uses might include any of the following:
We can design any type of garden building you require bespoke to your requirements.
We use only the best raw materials here at Vale Stables. All of our timber is sourced from Sweden and Estonia due to the colder climates which produce denser timber with tight growth rings.
Garden buildings will also have a concrete base and semi-engineering bricks or galvanised steel, depending on your preferences to prolong the life of your building.
Generally, we recommend semi-engineering bricks if your building is lightweight and you are looking for thermal insulation on a budget. However, steel is better for larger buildings where strength and durability are key.
As standard, we use 11 OSB boards to line our Onduline roofs to prevent sagging and improve the structural integrity of the roof. Our Onduline roofing can be ordered in black, green, red, or brown. There is also an option to have an Asphalt shingle or Cedar shingle on request.
We always advise guttering to the front of your garden building, whereas the back is more of a matter of preference. Leaf guards are also available if required.
At Vale Stables, we pride ourselves on crafting beautiful, functional garden buildings built to last. But even the sturdiest structures need some TLC to keep them looking their best and functioning smoothly. Here are our top tips for maintaining your wooden garden building:
Yes, you can use a garden building as a home office! A garden building is a great way to give you that extra space for a home office without the need for a messy and costly extension. As you don’t require planning permission, your garden home office could be a hassle-free solution for your needs.
Plus, you don’t need to compromise on aesthetics. We can offer anything from Georgian windows and cedar shingles down to carpet tiles, depending on your requirements for your perfect home office.
Our garden buildings are designed for year-round use. We can install double-glazed windows and doors to insulate your building for those colder months. Our timber is also a good insulator due to its structure and low thermal conductivity.
Customer satisfaction is so important to us at Vale Stables. We aim to ensure your garden building conforms to your unique specifications. We will rectify any issue raised by our customers so that the goods conform to the order confirmation and specification.
How long a garden building will take to build will ultimately depend on your project and can vary depending on your requirements.
Typically, we can often produce bespoke panels within 10-14 days and as our trained and experienced carpenters produce their steelwork, we can design and build entirely to order much faster than our competitors. We will work with you to provide a timeframe that is both feasible and works for you.
The typical lifespan of a garden building can be anywhere from 10 to 30 years plus. We build our garden buildings with the highest grade of timber, making them extremely durable and weather-resistant for many years. You can also opt for a cedar shingle roof which has a lifespan of 30 years.
Our garden building prices vary depending on size and requirements. See our prices here or contact us for a customised quote.
The best way to heat your garden building depends on size, frequency of use, budget, and energy source availability. Electric or gas heaters are popular for their affordability while wood-burning stoves offer a cosy feel but require maintenance and proper ventilation.
Of course! We are here to help you design and build your perfect garden building. We will work with you to get an exact plan and specifications you are happy with to ensure your expectations are met every step of the way.
